Our Neighbourhood

As we say in South Africa, "Local is lekker!" (For overseas visitors, this sums up the idea that what's close to home is often soulful and rewarding.) Jacques and Jenn are more than happy to share tips about their favourite, familiar comforts in the friendly, surrounding Constantia neighbourhood.

Step out of Devonport House, swing through the top turnstile gate of Groot Constantia, and stroll down from the high-lying vineyards to the estate's restaurants 350m away. Simon's - named after the Cape's first governor in the 1600s, Simon van der Stel - is particularly stunning. Sit inside and revel in one of the Baroque-themed rooms, or bask at an outside table and take in the sights and sounds of Constantia residents at play walking their dogs, jogging, or socialising over wine tasting.

Feel like a more urban buzz? Fifteen minutes' walk down the hill from Devonport House is the boutique High Constantia shopping centre. The gem is the vibey Chardonnay Deli; it serves generous bistro-style meals with modern twists, and no matter how replete you feel, it's impossible to leave without filling a basket with exotic ingredients and irresistible treats.

Two larger shopping centres in the vicinity, Constantia Village and the Constantia Emporium, cater for every retail therapy requirement. Afterwards, the best spot for a thirst quencher and a natter with the locals is Peddlars on the Bend, an iconic, landmark Constantia pub. Chances are you will want to go there again - and it's a delightful walk from Devonport House, through the working winery aspect of Groot Constantia, taking in the Muizenberg sea views, past stables and flower-growing acres.

Whether around the corner or in the wider suburb, Constantia offers a unique blend of heritage and cutting-edge, zestful activities and peaceful relaxation. We call it harmonious living, and we can share so much more with you...like the fact that six of the Constantia wine route's estates are in a five-kilometre radius of Devonport House!
